John relocated from Connecticut to North Carolina in 2007, after spending the better part of a 26- year career at United Technologies Corporation involved in graphic design, print and television advertising and direction of photography.
His paintings, in oil, acrylic and pastel, depict everyday scenes in a visually graphic style using a limited but dynamic palette.
John is a graduate of the Silvermine College of Art and the University of Hartford Art School. He credits his academic training for providing an invaluable base, but “it was the guidance of painter Beth Ellis, along with years working in partnership with Connecticut-based designer and painter Ted Bertz that expanded my understanding of design and color.” These mentors also encouraged John to pursue painting full-time.
He has also found the Eastern North Carolina arts community to be an invaluable resource, “a wonderful group of artists who are not afraid to share their secrets.”
Since coming to this area John has received the following awards:
A Purchase and Merit Award, Craven Arts Council 6th Annual Juried Show
Best in Show and First Place, Two Dimensional Art, Circle 10 Gallery Small Works Show
Bardill Purchase Award, Beaufort County Arts Council 43rd Juried Fine Arts Show
Excellence Award, Arts Council of Carteret County “Art from the Heart” show
First Prize, Arts Council of Carteret County, Juried Maritime Art Exhibition
Dr and Mrs. Reed Underhill Purchase Award, Craven Arts Council 7th Annual Juried Show
